Long Clawson Dairies

Cheese producer Long Clawson Dairies was recently faced with a safety handling problem affecting an increasing number of manufacturers - how to comply with health and safety regulations whilst achieving cost-effective manual handling.

For Long Clawson the problem involved cheese rounds weighing around 9kg each which needed to be manually transferred from location to location at a working height of approximately a metre and frequently 'turned' to achieve controlled maturity.

The company sought a handling technique incorporating a convenient working platform level to avoid repetitive stooping and back strain.

Traditional practices designed around four-way entry pallets throughout the production area precluded the use of conventional wrap-over fork stackers, and counterbalance stackers had been eliminated as too large for the available space.

SOLUTION

editorial-1 (39K)Straddle B69E stackers from Kentruck ticked all the boxes, with powered lift and traction to accommodate high handling frequencies and achieve an infinitely adjustable working height plus easy manoeuvrability. A straddle gap of 1050mm enabled the handling of 1000mm wide pallets through existing doorways.

Units were tailored specifically to cope with wet local conditions and featured damp-proofed electrics, stainless steel wheel bearings and protected chains, wheels and other moving parts. Three machines were initially acquired for use at the company's site in Harby, Melton Mowbray, and one at their main site at nearby Long Clawson. After a successful application programme four more machines were introduced.

"As the manufacture of organic white and blue Stilton cheeses, says Senior Supervisor David Riechert, we are members of a specialist breed but the requirement to balance throughput and production line welfare will be recognised by many other industries. We are well satisfied with our economical and highly effective solution."

B69E Models offer capacities up to 1000kg and lift heights up to 3750mm
